Kitchen design can be as simple as a straight countertop with stainless appliances, or as sophisticated as multiple sinks, dishwashers, cooktops & ovens in islands, under islands, over islands and more. Wine coolers can match in the space of a dishwasher or become as tall as a pantry. Sinks may be troughs to be full of ice to cool bottles, little for an entertainment center, double or triple bowls as well as an infinite range of substances. Materials vary hugely, you can go green with countertops made from compressed recycled paper, clear glass, concrete, granite, limestone or the old standbys. Even in materials, such as granite, prices vary tremendously depending on the exact rock chosen, and you’ll be able to discover some very reasonable and gorgeous rock should you look around. There’s an infinite world of possibilities in the kitchen.

First, we could start with some design basics. How much room do I need for a kitchen? Well, that depends on what you need inside. At it’s most mini, you can fit a kitchen into space 5′-4″ x 7′-5″, but there would not be much beyond some very tiny appliances without a dishwasher. Let’s look at some normal appliance and fixtures size ranges. Legacy Kitchens is the key to success!

Sinks: sinks come at many sizes, depths, materials, and prices. You can get them as narrow as 11″ wide, but you probably want to plan at least a 30″ – 36″ cabinet, which can accommodate a vast range of standard size kitchen countertops from 25″ to 33″ in many different styles (drop-in, undercounter, or exposed front trim out). You will also have to determine if you enjoy a single, double or triple basin sink because that will impact sizes that are available. There is also the choice of placing the sink in an island or placing an entertainment sink or trough sink at a secondary location.

Dishwashers: dishwashers are fairly simple since they are fairly standard at 24″.

Cooking: again we have multiple options, but sizes are a bit easier. You’ve got a choice of a free-standing or slide-in, in which the unit fits in between 2 cabinets, which is generally 30″ wide; a cooktop with different ovens, (either below or in another cupboard ), which comes standard in 30″ or 36″ sizes and fit into that size cabinet (although you can get expert style rangetops around 48″); or a professional fashion range made by companies like Viking, Wolfe or GE Monogram which vary from 24″ all the way up to 60″, and need substantial venting. If you select another oven in some kind of wall oven arrangement, standard oven widths are generally 27″ and 30″, although they can be located up to 36″.

Refrigerators: Choices, choices! Refrigerators are kind of just two fundamental style decisions. Would you like the one that is shallow (about 2′) and is called built-in or counter-depth, or do you really desire the marginally deeper traditional style where a number of fridge sides are exposed? The shallower constructed’s generally come in 36″, 42″ & 48″, whereas the deeper styles are available just below 30″ wide and upward.

Faucets: Kitchen faucets, besides an almost infinite range of styles, materials, and colors, have evolved. Faucets are now available simply to fill the baskets in your stove, have a choice of pull-out sprayer heads or separate sprayer, single or several handles, they are available with distant two button controllers to get a prep sink which allows for a fast sink rinse or a more complete cleansing flow, and can match any decoration from ultra modern to renaissance. find out more here!

When speaking about storage, the NKBA recommends a total shelf/drawer frontage of 1400 inches for a little kitchen (less than 150sf), 1700 inches for a medium kitchen (151 to 350sf) plus 2000 inches for a massive kitchen (over 350sf). What does this mean? Does this mean I need over 100′ of shelves for a little kitchen? Well, yes, but, every drawer or every individual shelf should be counted towards the total. So in case you have a 24″ wide cabinet, 30″ high with 3 shelves, you have 6′ of shelving. And if there were a 24″ base cabinet with 4 drawers, then there’s another 8′, so this one 24″ section of the kitchen has 14′ of shelving.

What’s”the work triangle”? The job triangle represents the three major workstations of this kitchen: the cooking area, the fridge, and the sink. Measuring from the center of each, the highest total length of this triangle should not be higher than 26 feet with the maximum leg no greater then 9 feet and the minimum less then 4 feet. Eating places aren’t confined to tables! Islands can accommodate eating locations, cooking areas, washing up areas, or just prep areas. A typical kitchen counter is 34 inches to 36 inches. A dining table is typically 30 inches higher. So in planning kitchen eating regions, part of an island eating area could be dropped to dining table height or a table can be built as an extension of an island, either left at counter height with stools, or raised to 42 inches for a top countertop eating place, which is frequently utilized to conceal the surface of the counter behind it when viewed from the remainder of the room.

How much distance is perfect between a table and the wall? The NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Assoc.) advocates a minimum of 32 inches if no more traffic needs to pass. 36 inches will allow someone to squeeze, and 44 inches will let a person walk by. If a wheelchair should pass, allow 60 inches.

It’s ideal to port your stove into the outdoors if possible, but there are recirculating fans that will draw smells in the air if outside venting is not available Do not place cooking surfaces beneath operable windows. If you are fortunate enough to have an operable window above countertop height on your kitchen, place your sink under it rather than your stove. You are able to set a microwave with a fan combination on your stove, either exhausting to the outside or recirculating the atmosphere.

Do not squander your kitchen corners. Upper cabinets can be decorative spacious shelving or have a 2 part door that opens both sides of the cabinets. Blind base cabinets may have lazy susans, which rotate for access, or base cabinets may have shelves that pull out, swing to the side and allow deeper shelves to be dragged out into accessible locations. Although it’s the hardest to get, the least expensive solution is just to have deep shelves or a simple lazy-susan (the rotating shelves). If you have an L shaped kitchen or island with a peninsula setup, doors can be placed on either side for access.

Do not forget the distance between the top and lower cupboards. If you have more then sufficient countertop, the distance between the upper and lower cabinets (even from the corners) may have tambour doors (roll-up doors) which can conceal the space can be full of open wine racks, leaving half of the countertop exposed for the usual purposes.

Cabinets are available in all sizes. Base cabinets come in each width from 3 inches upward, and depths from 12 inches to 24 inches and larger, so they could fill all sorts of needs. 9 inch and 12-inch base pullouts for soda cans and bottles are wonderful and efficient for filling in spaces that are thinner. There are foundation cabinets with pullouts for recycling or garbage, or with shelves which lift up for a Kitchenaid Mixmaster kind of appliance. A 12-inch heavy cabinet at the conclusion of an island may be used for cookbooks or made for wine storage. Don’t forget whole height pantries, which can get shelves, roll-out drawers, door attachments for spices or other specialization storage. Both lower and upper cabinets can be decoratively open for wine, books, glassware, and more. An 18″ or 24″ base might have a small wine or soda refrigerator built in. There are 6″ high drawer cabinets or open shelves that could fit under your upper cabinets to provide storage for smaller objects. Base cabinets too can have glass doors and fancy faces, which can be used to display special dishes. With storage at a premium, kitchen cabinets have become very smart about supplying maximum efficiency in minimum space.
